The Setting

A living, protected, and recognized wetland

Located between the Gulf of Mexico and the lowland jungle of Yucatán, the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve protects 60,347 hectares of mangroves, hypersaline coastal lagoons, petenes, and dunes. It was the first wetland in Mexico to be inscribed on the Ramsar List (Site 332, in 1986) and has been part of UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2004.

This is where the Caribbean pink flamingo nests, and more than 330 bird species and 554 vertebrate species coexist. Each outing is a careful interpretation of the landscape: the tide, the light, and the season determine what the estuary reveals.

Our Approach to Guiding

Responsible, low-impact ecotourism

The reservation area is zoned to protect its core. We operate in accordance with these rules: nature comes first, always.

Certified local guides

They know the water, the wildlife, and the season inside and out because they live from and for the estuary.

Environmental interpretation

You don’t just see wildlife—you gain an understanding of the ecosystem, its cycles, and why it’s protected.

Respect and distance from wildlife

The flamingos are not chased; they are observed from a distance so as not to disturb their rest.

Schedules vary depending on tides and weather

Departures are adjusted based on actual conditions to ensure your safety and the best possible experience.

Small groups

Private experiences that minimize the impact and enhance what you can see and learn.

Protected core zones

We respect the zoning of the reserve and the authorized routes within it.
