Fishing

Two species, one intact bay

The estuary is a system of flats, mangroves, and mouths that supports one of the cleanest fly fisheries in the Mexican Caribbean. We set out at dawn, read the water, and go after the fish of the day.

Jorge and Carlos — fly fishing guides in Río Lagartos JORGE & CARLOS
Your guides

Jorge and Carlos. Four generations reading the water.

We grew up in these mouths. We know where the shad bank is in May, what fly to cast for the snook at low tide, and how the bite changes with each tide. We fish every day — and translate that reading of the water into a day that you enjoy, even if it's your first time with the rod.

What to bring

The essentials for the day

  • Polarized lensesEssential. Without polarized lenses, you can't see the fish underwater — and sight fishing is half the game.
  • Reef-safe sunscreenSPF 50+, no oxybenzone. We are in a biosphere reserve — we care for coral and mangroves.
  • Long sleeve shirt UPFLightweight, light color. The Yucatán sun at 11 am is unforgiving.
  • Buff or scarfNeck and face protected. It also helps you when it's windy.
  • Closed footwearWater shoes or closed-toe shoes. The boat is wet and slippery.
  • Water and snackWe bring a cooler with water. If you have restrictions, bring your own.
  • Camera or GoProRecommended waterproof case. The photo of the first snook does not repeat.
We provide — Boat, motor, all the fly gear (rods, reels, lines, leaders, flies), bilingual guide, fishing license, water, ice, fruits, and the trained eye to spot the fish before you do.
Frequently Asked Questions

Before coming

No. Approximately half of our clients are beginners. We teach you the basic cast in the first 30 minutes and focus on accessible areas. If you already have experience, we take you straight to sight fishing for tarpon in the flats.
If the conditions are unsafe (winds > 25 knots, storm), we will reschedule at no cost or refund your full deposit. Light rain does not stop fishing — the fish are still there.
Yes, with a full refund up to 48 hours in advance. After that, we can reschedule to another date without penalty within the next 12 months.
Yes, since 12 years old with an adult. For children under 10, we recommend our traditional fishing tour — more relaxed and with a better chance of consistent catch.
Yes, 100%. We use barbless hooks, quick photos, and release. The tarpon and snook are too valuable for the ecosystem and the fishery to take home.
We included it. We have valid permits with SEMARNAT and CONAPESCA, and we operate within the permitted zone of the Biosphere Reserve.

What those who have come say

★★★★★

The best guides in the area. They know the water, where and when to cast. We caught a snook and a redfish on the last cast. We will return without a doubt.

World-class flat fishing without the crowds of Belize. Jorge saw the school before I noticed the water moving. Magical.

My first time with a fly rod. Carlos taught me the cast in 15 minutes and by the end of the day, I had my first snook. Patient and masters of the craft.
