The fastest and most comprehensive way to discover the Lagartos Estuary. A 20-km boat ride through the Biosphere Reserve to see pink flamingos, crocodiles, and mangroves, and to experience the traditional Mayan white clay bath. Designed for visitors who are short on time but eager to experience nature.
Private Tour · 2 hours
The Flamingos Classic Tour was designed for travelers who arrive in Ría Lagartos with limited time but don’t want to miss the essentials: the magic of seeing Caribbean pink flamingos in the wild, navigating the mangrove channels, encountering crocodiles, and feeling the white clay of the Mayan tradition on their skin.
In just 2 hours and a 20-km journey, our local guide takes you through the best of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve: a 60,347-hectare wetland that is Mexico’s first Ramsar site and the country’s main sanctuary for the greater flamingo.
This is what the Flamingos Classic Tour is all about: no filters, no retouching—just the Ría Lagartos in its purest form.

Two carefully curated hours so you can see the highlights at a leisurely pace. Each stop is designed to offer you an authentic experience of the Reserve.
We’ll meet you at the departure point in Ría Lagartos. After a safety briefing and the distribution of life jackets, we’ll provide an introduction to the ecosystem before boarding the boat, which is equipped with a sunroof and comfortable seats.
We sail slowly through channels lined with red, white, and black mangroves. With the help of our ornithologist guide and binoculars, we spot herons, ospreys, cormorants, seagulls, and pelicans.
We approach in silence the areas where the Caribbean pink flamingo feeds and rests. Time is set aside for photography and observation without disturbing the birds.
We’ll be looking for American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) in their resting areas. If we’re lucky, we’ll also see raccoons, iguanas, turtles, and mammals native to the Reserve.
The highlight: We stop at the traditional Mayan bath. You cover your body with white mineral clay, let it dry in the sun, and then rinse off in waters with a high concentration of salts and sulfur. An ancient, natural exfoliation treatment.
We’ll stop briefly at a beach on the Gulf of Mexico for a refreshing dip. We’ll return to the dock and wrap up at the restaurant El Rincón de Río, where you can take a freshwater shower and enjoy the catch of the day (optional).
A carefully curated tour so all you have to do is show up, breathe, and take it all in. No surprises, no hidden costs.

Ría Lagartos was the first Mexican wetland to be included on the Ramsar List (1986) and is the main sanctuary for the Caribbean pink flamingo in Mexico. Each hectare is part of a unique ecosystem.
The tour is physically low-impact, but these essentials will make your experience unforgettable.
To protect your skin and the ecosystem. Common sunscreens harm the mangroves and flamingos.
A must-do to enjoy the Mayan swim and the stop at the Gulf beach.
Make sure you have a good memory. You’ll want to remember every flamingo, every sunrise.
Neutral colors (avoid bright reds), a cap or wide-brimmed hat, and polarized sunglasses.
We provide water, but please help us reduce plastic waste at the Reserve by bringing your own bottle.
Optional: We provide professional binoculars, but if you have your own, feel free to bring them.
Especially useful during the rainy season (Jun–Oct). Please make it biodegradable.
For meals, tips, or the reserve access fee. There is a payment terminal at the restaurant.
Yes. Ría Lagartos is the main sanctuary for the Greater Flamingo in the Caribbean in Mexico and the country’s only nesting area. There is a year-round resident population (~4,500 birds in January) that grows to ~26,000 during the nesting season (April–August). Our guide knows the exact spots where they feed, and we approach quietly so as not to disturb them.
The Flamingos Classic Tour is our most popular and accessible tour: 2 hours, 20 km of boating, ideal if you’re visiting Ría Lagartos with limited time or if it’s your first visit. It includes the essentials: flamingos, mangroves, crocodiles, and a Mayan-style swim. If you’re looking for something more in-depth (40 km, 3 hours, petenes, and springs), the Naturelovers Tour is for you.
This is an ancient Mayan tradition of exfoliation and purification. We stop in an area where the water has a high concentration of salts and mineral sulfur. You cover your body with natural white clay, let it dry in the sun for a few minutes, and then rinse it off. The result: soft, refreshed skin and a ritual connected to the local culture. It is not mandatory; it is entirely optional.
Essentials: biodegradable sunscreen, cap or hat, sunglasses, light-colored, neutral-toned clothing (avoid bright reds, which scare birds away), swimsuit, towel, camera or phone with plenty of storage space, and a reusable water bottle. Optional: binoculars (we provide them), biodegradable insect repellent, and cash for food at the restaurant at the end of the tour.
Absolutely. The tour is low-impact: slow cruising, a stable boat with comfortable seats, a sunroof, and life jackets for everyone. It’s perfect for families, couples, and groups of any age. For children under 5, please contact us in advance to confirm the availability of a child-sized life jacket.
It’s not necessary. You won’t be getting off the boat in deep water. Everyone wears a life jacket during the tour, and the boat is covered by travel insurance. The optional stops (the Mayan bath and the Gulf beach) are in shallow water, where you can easily stand.
Flamingos are present year-round. The peak nesting season is between April and August (you can see up to 26,000 flamingos in June). From November through May, the weather is dry and sunny, ideal for photography. The rainy season (June–October) features dramatic skies and lush natural scenery; showers are usually brief in the afternoon.
If the weather compromises safety or the quality of the sighting, we’ll reschedule at no cost or refund your deposit. Rainstorms in Yucatán are usually brief: sometimes we wait 20 minutes at the dock and then continue. The final decision always prioritizes your safety and enjoyment.
You reserve the boat with a deposit via$500 MXN MercadoPago, Stripe, or WhatsApp. The remaining balance is paid in cash or by bank transfer at the start of the tour at the meeting point. If you need to cancel more than 24 hours in advance, we’ll refund or reschedule your deposit at no charge.
Ría Lagartos is located in northeastern Yucatán. It’s about a 3-hour drive from Mérida; 1.5 hours from Valladolid; 3.5 hours from Cancún; and 4–5 hours from Tulum or Holbox. Private transportation services and public minibuses are available. Once your reservation is confirmed, we’ll send you the exact location of the meeting point and directions on how to get there.
