How is life lived

The journey, step by step

Two curated hours for you to see the essentials at a leisurely pace. Each stop is designed to offer you an authentic encounter with the Reserve.

00:00

Welcome at the dock

We welcome you at the departure point in Ría Lagartos. Safety briefing, life jackets, introduction to the ecosystem, and we board the boat equipped with a solar roof and comfortable seats.

00:15

Mangrove and avifauna

We slowly navigated through channels of red, white, and black mangroves. We identified herons, ospreys, cormorants, seagulls, and pelicans with the help of the birdwatching guide and binoculars.

00:40

Flamingo zone

We quietly approached the areas where the Caribbean pink flamingo feeds and rests. Time dedicated to photography and observation without disturbing the birds.

01:05

Crocodiles & wildlife

We are looking for American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) in their resting areas. If luck is on our side, we will also see raccoons, iguanas, turtles, and endemic mammals of the Reserve.

01:25

Mayan clay bath

The favorite stop: we stop at the traditional Mayan bath. You cover your body with white mineral clay, let it dry in the sun, and then rinse off in waters with a high concentration of salts and sulfurs. Ancestral natural exfoliation.

01:50

Gulf Beach & return

We stopped briefly at the beach of the Gulf of Mexico for a refreshing dip. We returned to the dock and closed at the restaurant El Rincón de Río, where you can take a freshwater shower and enjoy the catch of the day (optional).

Recommendations

What to bring to live it to the fullest

The tour is low-impact physically, but these essentials will make your experience unforgettable.

Biodegradable sunscreen

To care for your skin and the ecosystem. Common sunscreens harm the mangroves and flamingos.

Swimsuit and towel

Essential to enjoy the Mayan bath and the stop at the Gulf beach.

Camera or cell phone

Make sure to have a good memory. You'll want to keep every flamingo, every sunrise.

Cool clothes and hat

Neutral colors (avoid bright reds), wide-brimmed hat or cap, and polarized sunglasses.

Reusable bottle

We bring water, but help us reduce plastics in the Reserve by bringing your own bottle.

Own binoculars

Optional: we carry professional binoculars, but if you have your own, bring them.

Natural repellent

Especially useful during the rainy season (Jun–Oct). Please make it biodegradable.

Cash for extras

For food, tips, or the access fee to the Reserve. There is a terminal at the restaurant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything travelers like you ask us.

Am I going to see pink flamingos for sure?

Yes. Ría Lagartos is the main sanctuary of the Caribbean pink flamingo in Mexico and the only nesting area in the country. There is a resident population year-round (~4,500 individuals in January) that grows to ~26,000 during the nesting season (April–August). Our guide knows the exact spots where they feed, and we approach quietly so as not to disturb them.

What makes this tour different from the others?

The Flamingos Classic Tour is our most popular and accessible tour: 2 hours, 20 km of navigation, ideal if you arrive at Ría Lagartos with limited time or if it's your first visit. It includes the essentials: flamingos, mangroves, crocodiles, and a Mayan bath. If you're looking for something deeper (40 km, 3 hours, petenes, and springs), the Tour Naturelovers is for you.

What is the "Mayan Bath" exactly?

It is an ancient Mayan tradition of exfoliation and purification. We stop in an area where the water has a high concentration of mineral salts and sulfur. You cover your body with natural white clay, let it dry in the sun for a few minutes, and then rinse off. The result: smooth, refreshed skin and a ritual connected to the local culture. It is not mandatory; it is completely optional.

What should I bring on the day of the tour?

Essentials: biodegradable sunscreen, cap or hat, sunglasses, light clothing in neutral colors (avoid bright reds that scare away birds), swimsuit, towel, camera or phone with good memory, and a reusable bottle. Optional: binoculars (we are bringing), biodegradable repellent, and effective food for the closing restaurant.

Is the tour suitable for children and seniors?

Totally. The tour is of low physical impact: slow navigation, stable boat with comfortable seats, sunroof, and life jackets for everyone. It is perfect for families, couples, and groups of any age. For children under 5 years old, please contact us in advance to confirm the availability of a child life jacket.

Do I need to know how to swim?

It is not necessary. You do not get off the boat in deep waters. Everyone wears a life jacket during the trip and the boat has travel insurance. The optional stops (Mayan bathroom and Gulf beach) are in shallow waters, where you can stand comfortably.

What is the best month to come?

There are flamingos year-round. The peak nesting season is between April and August (you can see up to 26,000 flamingos in June). From November to May, the weather is dry and sunny, ideal for photography. The rainy season (Jun–Oct) has dramatic skies and the most lush nature; the rains are usually short in the afternoon.

What happens if it rains or there is bad weather?

If the weather compromises safety or the quality of the sighting, we will reschedule at no cost or refund your deposit. Rain in Yucatán is usually brief: sometimes we wait 20 minutes at the dock and continue. The final decision always takes your safety and enjoyment into account.

How does payment and cancellation work?

You reserve the boat with a deposit of $500 MXN via MercadoPago, Stripe, or WhatsApp. The remaining balance is paid in cash or transfer at the start of the tour at the meeting point. If you need to cancel with more than 24 hours in advance, we will refund or reschedule the deposit at no charge.

How do I get to Ría Lagartos?

Ría Lagartos is located in the northeast of Yucatán. From Mérida it takes about 3 hours by car; from Valladolid, 1.5 hours; from Cancún, 3.5 hours; from Tulum or Holbox, 4–5 hours. There are private transportation services and public combis. Once your reservation is confirmed, we will send you the exact location of the meeting point and recommendations on how to get there.
