What to do in Yucatán from September to December: festivals, flavors, and Río Lagartos

Festivals, Hanal Pixán, and flavors of Yucatán: check the calendar from September to December, identify the annual dates of the upcoming programs, and plan a getaway to Río Lagartos.

Beach and coastal landscape of Río Lagartos, Yucatán, Mexico

A square lit up on the night of the Grito. The smell of freshly opened pib. A morning on the coast, watching a flamingo glide over the water. From September to December, Yucatán invites you to connect celebrations, flavors, and nature in one trip.

Start by choosing the experience that interests you the most and leave some space around it. This guide brings together nine festivities and a suggestion to continue on to Río Lagartos, with sources that distinguish the traditional dates from the still pending programs.

Choose your moment: calendar from September to December

A traditional date does not confirm a schedule. Annual celebrations keep their days; concerts, tours, and fairs may have a different agenda. To travel for an event, confirm the program with its organizer.

September: a night of plaza and celebration

El Grito is celebrated on the night of the 15th; the 16th recalls the beginning of Independence. You can choose Mérida, Valladolid, Izamal, or Progreso as a base, depending on the rest of your itinerary. Municipal programs are consulted separately from these commemoration dates.

If you are going with family, look for accommodation from which they can walk to the plaza. Check street closures, agree on a meeting point, and plan the return before leaving. For the next morning, leave a leisurely breakfast and time for the transfer.

Hanal Pixán: memory is also served at the table

In Hanal Pixán, also written Janal Pixán, families remember those who have passed away with food and offerings. The tradition concentrates from October 31 to November 2. The pib or mucbipollo, traditionally prepared underground, is one of its most recognizable flavors. Yucatán Travel explains its meaning.

Ask local kitchens if you need to order it and share the table without hurry. When approaching an altar, ask for permission before photographing: it may be part of an intimate celebration. For the Paseo de las Ánimas in Mérida, check the municipal program; its dates are not automatically deduced from the days of Hanal Pixán.

Pink flamingos over the water
Make space to look: the coastal landscape deserves its own rhythm.

Río Lagartos: continue the journey to the water

After the plazas and shared tables, reserve time for the coast. Río Lagartos is the town; Ría Lagartos is the name of the biosphere reserve. Its wetlands are home to Caribbean flamingos, migratory birds, and crocodiles, as documented by the CONANP.

The classic flamingo tour allows you to get close to the landscape from a boat. If you enjoy identifying birds and stopping to observe, check out the birdwatching tour. Confirm schedule, inclusions, and departure conditions; each visit depends on nature. Keep your distance and follow the guide's instructions.

Las Coloradas: includes a visit with its own timing

In Las Coloradas, the saltworks crystallizers show different shades of pink. The park explains the role of salt and pigmented organisms. Check their walking, biking, or vehicle tours and verify if your booking includes entry and transportation. The water color varies with the crystallizers' conditions; check with the park before organizing your visit.

The Octopus Festival, on the pending agenda

The cuisine also tells the story of the port. The 2025 Octopus Festival brought together gastronomy and cultural activities. The date and program for 2026 are still pending verification. Confirm them before organizing a trip around the festival.

A getaway in three moments

This is a rhythm proposal, adjustable to your days and the chosen event:

  1. Experience the celebration. Dedicate an afternoon and a night to the locality you chose. Leave time to walk and eat.
  2. Continue to Río Lagartos. Organize the transfer separately and, if possible, stay in the town to avoid a rushed departure.
  3. Gift a morning to the estuary. Book your tour and keep time for eating, resting, or visiting Las Coloradas if conditions allow.

Weather and luggage: travel with margin

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to CONAGUA. Cold fronts can also bring wind and waves to Yucatán; Procivy recommends paying attention to Captaincy notices regarding maritime activities. This information explains the season, but does not replace the forecast for your visit.

Confirm the departure with the operator and check the current Civil Protection notices. Bring light clothing, a hat, water, comfortable shoes, a light raincoat, and a case to protect your phone. If you have binoculars, it's worth making space for them. Also, ask how to reschedule the tour when the weather changes.
