The experience

A silent encounter with the most biodiverse ecosystem of the Mexican Caribbean.

The Naturelovers Tour is an environmental interpretation experience designed for true nature lovers. We travel by boat for about 40 km through channels surrounded by mangroves, where we turn off the engine to listen to the fluttering of the birds and approach —without disturbing— the feeding areas of the Caribbean pink flamingo.

We visited freshwater springs, wetlands, petenes (islets of trees within the mangrove), and the coastal dunes of the Gulf of Mexico. With a little luck, you will observe crocodiles —Crocodylus acutus and Crocodylus moreletii— and endemic mammals.

It's not a boat ride: it's reading the mangrove as one reads a living book, page by page, bird by bird.

How is life lived

The itinerary, hour by hour

A leisurely pace to see it all. No rush, no crowds, with stops at the discretion of the guide and the animals.

00:00

Meeting at the dock

We start at our departure point or, if you are staying in Río Lagartos, we will pick you up at your hotel dock. Safety briefing, life jackets, and introduction to the estuary.

00:20

Mangrove channels

We navigated through narrow channels surrounded by red, black, and white mangroves. Herons, ospreys, seagulls, and cormorants accompany us. We turned off the engine to listen.

01:00

Flamingo zone

We silently approached the feeding areas. We observed the Caribbean pink flamingo filtering food, resting, and flying. Extended time for photography without stress for the bird.

02:00

Petenes and springs

We visited the petenes, islands of trees that grow on freshwater sprouts within the brackish wetland. A unique phenomenon in the world. If the fauna shows up, we observe crocodiles and mammals.

02:30

Mayan bath & Gulf beach

Optional at no extra cost: we stop at the traditional Maya mud bath with mineral clay and, if you wish, we stop at the beach of the Gulf of Mexico before returning.

03:00

Closing at El Rincón de Río

We finish at the dock of your hotel or at the restaurant El Rincón de Río, where you can take a freshwater shower and enjoy the catch of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What travelers like you ask us

Am I going to see pink flamingos for sure?
Yes. Ría Lagartos is the only nesting site of the Caribbean pink flamingo in Mexico. There is a resident population year-round (~4,500 individuals in January) that grows to ~26,000 during the nesting season from April to August. Our guides know the feeding areas and we approach quietly, respecting the distance that the wildlife dictates.
What should I bring on the day of the tour?
Biodegradable sunscreen, cap or hat, sunglasses, lightweight neutral-colored clothing (avoid bright reds and whites), a towel, reusable water bottle, camera or phone with good memory, and if you have them, your own binoculars (we can lend you some too). For early morning outings, a light sweatshirt.
Is the tour suitable for children and seniors?
Totally. The tour is of low physical impact: leisurely navigation, comfortable seats, and a sunroof. It is perfect for families, couples, and groups of any age. For children under 5 years old, please contact us first to confirm the availability of a child life jacket.
Do I need to know how to swim?
No. You do not get off the boat in deep waters. Everyone wears a life jacket during the trip and the boat is covered by travel insurance. The only optional stops are the Mayan mud bath in shallow waters and the Gulf beach —and both are entirely voluntary.
Can you pick me up at my hotel?
If you stay in Río Lagartos, we can take the boat to the dock of your hotel at no extra cost. If you are coming from outside (Mérida, Valladolid, Cancún, Tulum, Holbox), we will provide you with the exact meeting point and recommendations on how to get there.
What happens if it rains or there is bad weather?
If the weather compromises safety or the quality of the sighting, we will reschedule at no cost or refund your deposit. The rainy season (Jun–Oct) usually has short afternoon rains: if they occur, we wait at the dock and continue. The dry season (Nov–May) has clear skies almost daily.
What is the best time to book?
Dawn outings (5:00 – 7:00 am) offer the best birdwatching —they are more active— and the softest light for photography. Sunset outings (3:30 pm) gift the coral sky over the estuary with flamingos flying back. Both moments are magic, in different light.
How does payment and cancellation work?
You reserve the boat with a deposit of $500 MXN via Mercado Pago, Stripe, or WhatsApp. The remaining balance is paid in cash or transfer at the beginning or end of the tour. If you need to cancel more than 24 hours in advance, we will refund or reschedule the deposit at no charge.
