Experience tour by Jorge

Private tour.
Advance reservation
You can do the tour in the morning or in the afternoon, only 2 departures during the day.

This is a personalized tour hosted by Jorge Núñez, nature and family guide.

On this 4-hour trip we will use environmental interpretation techniques to understand and learn about this natural reserve of Ría Lagartos, where we will travel by boat through different ecosystems to observe flora and fauna.

You will learn about culture, history, lifestyle inside the natural reserve, and the pros and cons of living near the salt industry of Las Coloradas, where the pink-water ponds are located.

During this tour you will do activities such as a clay bath and swimming at the beach.

  • This tour is based directly on our recommendations, taking into account weather and tide forecasts, so we visit areas that are not visited on conventional tours.

  • The tour is an extensive visit through the different ecosystems such as the estuary or the Ría, the petenes, freshwater springs, coastal dunes, mangroves, low flooded deciduous forest, and plant communities such as reeds or sea grape, which serve as refuge, feeding areas, breeding areas, and resting areas for a great variety of flora and fauna over about 60 kilometers round-trip, exploring the channels at different points of interest where we can find different bird species from the more than 400 species recorded, as well as mammals and reptiles that inhabit the area.

  • (If the weather allows it) you will be able to learn about the history of the Maya who lived in the area, the culinary heritage of the Maya, trade at that time, and probably see Maya remains. (The archaeological site of Emal, Yucatán, was one of the largest salt-production centers of the ancient Maya. Being at the site helps us understand the production and export of this salt, as well as local subsistence strategies and long-distance trade that passed through this place.

  • Isla Cerritos https://g.co/kgs/dNRtkP ) according to the weather forecast.

  • We will cross under the bridge of Las Coloradas, where you can see part of Las Coloradas in the ponds where the natural process of salt formation and color (reddish) takes place.

  • You can enjoy the Mayan bath (not mandatory).

  • This tour ends on one of the different beaches that the natural reserve has on the Gulf of Mexico, in order to swim, relax, or rinse off the Mayan bath.

Non-crowded schedules

  • To do this activity, 2 timetables are recommended, and we will suggest one for you based on the weather forecasts for this winter season.

In the morning 5:30 am (If you are an early riser and like the outdoors, here is a way to enjoy one of nature’s special moments: take your first cup of coffee outside, stay still for a few moments and listen. It is the best time of day to listen to the birds.

“Right at dawn is the optimal time to hear the chorus.)

Or in the afternoon 2:30 pm, sunset, twilight, night. You will be able to see the onset of night to observe wildlife as it gets dark. (We bring handheld flashlights.)

(We can adapt to a schedule that is more comfortable for you.)

  • The tour can start at our meeting point or, if you are staying in Río Lagartos, we can bring our boat to your hotel dock.

  • It can end at your hotel dock or at the restaurant El Rincón de Río to take a fresh-water shower and enjoy the catch of the day (meals included depending on departure time).

This trip is for all ages and perfect for people looking for a high-contact experience with nature, combined with environmental interpretation and excellent opportunities to take photographs.
